CO₂ Carrier Arrives in Esbjerg

The first European-built offshore CO₂ carrier has arrived at the Port of Esbjerg, marking a key step forward in carbon capture and storage logistics.

Blue Water’s Port Agency team managed the arrival of Carbon Destroyer 1, a vessel owned by Royal Wagenborg. Measuring nearly 150 metres in length, the DP2 vessel is purpose-built for transporting liquefied CO₂ and will operate in the Danish North Sea.

The port call involved detailed pre-arrival planning and coordination with port authorities, terminal operators and service providers. Blue Water handled pilotage, towage, documentation and compliance procedures, ensuring a safe and efficient berthing process.

“This operation demonstrated the strength of our Port Agency team in handling complex and high-profile port calls,” said Klaus Odby Jensen, Global Head of Port Agency.

The vessel will support the Greensand Future initiative, led by INEOS, which aims to establish the European Union’s first operational offshore CO₂ storage facility. The project focuses on transporting captured CO₂ by sea to storage sites beneath the North Sea.

Based on Wagenborg’s Easymax design, Carbon Destroyer 1 can carry approximately 5,000 tonnes of liquefied CO₂ and is equipped with advanced positioning and intake capabilities required for offshore operations.

The vessel’s arrival highlights the growing role of maritime transport in enabling large-scale CCS projects, supporting Europe’s transition toward lower-carbon energy systems.
