Econowind is expanding into the deepsea segment with the launch of its new 5-series VentoFoil, a larger suction wing system designed for oceangoing vessels.
Unveiled in Heeg, the 30-metre steel unit builds on the proven concept of the company’s 3-series, which has already seen more than 150 units deployed across various vessel types. With the new model, Econowind aims to support shipowners seeking practical ways to reduce fuel consumption and meet tightening environmental regulations on long-haul routes.
The first 5-series VentoFoil will be installed this summer on a vessel operated by Boomsma Shipping, marking its commercial debut. The order reflects continued confidence in wind-assisted propulsion as a viable solution for improving efficiency.
“As a returning customer, we are pleased to use VentoFoils again on our vessels,” said Johan Boomsma. “Wind propulsion has proven its value both economically and environmentally.”
To support its expansion, Econowind is also establishing production capabilities in the Far East, closer to major shipbuilding hubs. This will facilitate integration of the larger units into newbuild vessels.
“The 3-series has shown that our technology works in daily operations,” said Chiel de Leeuw, Chief Commercial Officer at Econowind. “With the 5-series, we are bringing that proven concept into the deepsea market.”
Using boundary-layer suction technology, the VentoFoil system generates additional thrust from wind, reducing engine load while remaining practical to operate, with minimal deck impact and flexible positioning during cargo operations.
