Liebherr tower cranes are playing a key role in the construction of a new metal processing facility for Aurubis in Hamburg, supporting complex lifting operations on a major sustainability driven industrial project.
The development, scheduled for completion in 2026, is being delivered by Züblin AG with crane supply managed by Feurig Baumaschinen. The lifting fleet includes large rental units from the Liebherr Tower Crane Center, notably the 1188 EC-H, 550 EC-H and 470 EC-B models, complemented by an additional 250 EC-B crane.
The project requires precise handling of heavy plant components and steel structures within a constrained industrial environment. According to the partners, the selected cranes offer high load reserves and operational reliability suited to demanding assembly operations. The EC-B flat top design also enables multiple cranes to work safely in confined spaces while simplifying logistics and assembly.
A central role is played by the 1188 EC-H Fibre crane, which incorporates fibre rope technology to increase lifting capacity and extend service life compared with conventional steel rope systems. The crane can handle loads of up to 40 tonnes and delivers enhanced performance for long term heavy duty applications.
The new Hamburg facility forms part of Aurubis’s wider sustainability strategy and is expected to process around 30,000 tonnes of additional recycling material annually from 2026. By expanding metallurgical capabilities and improving processing efficiency, the project aims to strengthen the circular economy and enhance the competitiveness of the Hamburg site.
