The World Shipping Council (WSC) has appointed Simon Bergulf as its next Vice-President, Environment and Climate, succeeding long-serving executive Bryan Wood-Thomas, who will retire in 2026 after leading WSC’s environment and climate work since 2008.

Bergulf will join WSC in March 2026, officially taking up the Vice-President role at the beginning of April 2026. He will also lead and manage WSC’s Brussels Office, strengthening the organisation’s engagement with European policymakers.

Bergulf currently serves as Group Representative for Europe at Maersk, a position he has held since 2017 with a strong focus on climate and environmental policy. Prior to Maersk, he held regulatory roles at Danish Shipping, building extensive experience in maritime regulation and sustainability.

WSC President and CEO Joe Kramek said Bergulf brings deep expertise in shipping regulation and climate policy, noting his role as former Chair and current Vice-Chair of the WSC Environment & Climate Council. Kramek added that decarbonisation remains a core focus for WSC members, who have collectively invested more than $150 billion in new vessels designed to operate on green fuels.

Bergulf said he looks forward to advancing decarbonisation, marine life protection, and environmental stewardship, highlighting the need for clear global rules and investment in new fuels and infrastructure.

WSC also praised Bryan Wood-Thomas for his key role in shaping global regulations on decarbonisation, air quality, chemicals and marine protection.
