Sarens has completed the dismantling of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) used for the Annacis Water Supply Tunnel Project in New Westminster, British Columbia. The project, led by Traylor Aecon, will ensure a reliable supply of clean drinking water for more than 2.7 million residents in the region.
The TBM, which excavated a 2.3 km tunnel between Surrey and New Westminster, was dismantled in a complex operation involving the removal of its 250,000 lb cutting head using an LTM 1400 crane. Working at a 25-foot radius in tight conditions near road traffic, Sarens’ engineering team performed detailed studies to calculate crane capacity, line length, and lift points, ensuring a safe and precise operation.
This tunnel forms part of a critical infrastructure program designed to enhance the reliability and capacity of the area’s water system, including new pipelines, valve chambers, and surface infrastructure. It will be one of five new tunnels in the region built to maintain water supply even in the event of natural disasters.
Sarens has been involved in the project since 2022, executing several heavy lifts, including the 40,000 lb man basket for the TBM, and will continue supporting construction through to its scheduled completion in 2027.
“A project of this magnitude and importance always demands precision and teamwork,” said Brett Allen, Project Manager at Sarens. “We’re proud to contribute to such a vital development for Canadian communities.”
