RIKON, the Latvian-based heavy lifting equipment manufacturer, has completed the installation of two remote-controlled RMG (Rail-Mounted Gantry) container cranes at the València-Font de Sant Lluís terminal, marking a significant milestone in the terminal’s modernization and digitalization efforts.
Each crane, with a 40-ton lifting capacity, is equipped with RIKON’s proprietary RROS (RIKON Remote Operation System), a sophisticated remote control technology developed in-house. This system places RIKON among a select group of manufacturers capable of delivering fully integrated remote-controlled solutions for container handling operations.
Operated by ADIF, Spain’s state railway infrastructure provider, the València-Font de Sant Lluís terminal plays a crucial role in the Mediterranean freight corridor. It facilitates the handling of up to 150,000 intermodal transport units annually and links inland rail routes with the Port of Valencia — Spain’s busiest container port, which processed 5.4 million TEU in 2022.
The newly installed cranes offer substantial improvements in efficiency, safety, and operator ergonomics. With the RROS technology, crane operators work from a remote control desk, ensuring high-precision handling while being shielded from adverse weather conditions. This setup not only boosts productivity but also enhances the safety and comfort of personnel.
Beyond Valencia, RIKON is continuing its expansion in Spain with the ongoing delivery of three fully automated A-RMG gantry cranes for the Madrid-Vicálvaro terminal, each also boasting a 40-ton lifting capacity. These projects underscore the company’s commitment to supporting the digital transformation of Europe’s intermodal logistics network.
The deployment of the RROS-equipped cranes in Valencia represents a major step forward for the terminal, strengthening its position as a high-tech logistics hub on Europe’s Mediterranean corridor.
