Kübler deploys new STB 320 bridge

German heavy haulage specialist Kübler has completed the first operational deployment of its new STB 320 girder bridge in a 36-axle configuration, marking a major milestone in extreme transport capabilities.

The system, mounted on two 18-axle Scheuerle L13 platforms, was used to transport two transformers weighing 282 tonnes each. Despite the extended configuration, the equipment achieved its full payload capacity of 320 tonnes, demonstrating its performance under maximum load conditions.

The transformers were delivered to the 380 kV substation in Hardebek, a key infrastructure project supporting Germany’s energy transition by transmitting wind power from the north to consumption centres in the south.

The operation combined multiple transport modes. Starting in Mönchengladbach, the units were moved by rail to the port of Krefeld, followed by shipment to Brunsbüttel. There, a floating crane transferred the cargo onto the quay, where the STB 320 enabled direct, crane-free loading thanks to its hydraulic lifting system.

The final 70 km road journey posed significant challenges, including bridge restrictions and tight urban sections. Thanks to the lightweight design of the girder bridge, axle loads were kept below 13 tonnes, eliminating the need for additional bridge reinforcements.

The 90-metre-long convoy, weighing 529 tonnes, navigated complex routes including roundabouts and low-clearance structures. Hydraulic height adjustment and three powerful prime movers ensured safe and precise transport.

Each transformer was delivered within two nights, highlighting Kübler’s ability to execute complex, large-scale logistics operations efficiently.
