Bennetts Cranes recently supported the redevelopment of two eight storey office buildings at 40 The Broadway in Westminster, working with RED Construction to deliver a lifting solution suited to the highly constrained city centre site.
From the early stages of the project, identifying a suitable crane configuration was essential to keeping the redevelopment programme on schedule. The location presented several technical challenges, including strict oversailing restrictions, limited on site power availability and the requirement to position the crane on top of the building’s lift overrun structure without introducing additional temporary works.
At the same time, the crane still needed to provide sufficient reach and lifting capacity to support the construction programme. These combined constraints significantly limited the available equipment options and required early technical assessment to determine a workable approach.
Following a detailed review of the site conditions, Bennetts Cranes worked closely with Potain UK to identify the most suitable crane for the project. The Potain MR 309 luffing jib tower crane was selected as it met the specific operational requirements of the site.
The crane offered a short out of service radius that allowed it to remain within site boundaries while still providing the lifting capacity needed at the required operating radius. Its low base loading enabled installation on top of the lift overrun without additional structural works, while adjustable power demand allowed it to operate effectively within the site’s limited electrical capacity. Zoning technology was also integrated into the crane setup to manage oversailing and reduce collision risks.
Bennetts Cranes supported the project throughout the crane’s time on site, coordinating closely with Potain UK and the RED Construction team to manage technical and logistical challenges as they arose.
The crane remained operational for the duration of the redevelopment works and was dismantled in line with the construction programme, helping ensure the project reached practical completion on schedule.
