The Caldwell Group Inc. has added its popular Model 85 coil lifter to the company’s SmartSpec digital configuration platform, further expanding online access to customizable below-the-hook (BTH) lifting solutions.
Based in Rockford, Illinois, Caldwell is known for highly engineered lifting equipment, and the motorized telescoping Model 85 coil grab is among its most frequently specified products. While standard units are stocked in capacities up to 33 tons, the lifter is often tailored to individual applications. Available options include higher capacities, rotation features, load scales, indicator lights, protective padding, and toe rollers.
SmartSpec is designed to help distributors and customers configure non-standard BTH equipment through a web-based system that provides real-time pricing, ordering, and product design tools. Users can also access drawings and technical details within minutes.
The Model 85 joins the Model 80H Dixon coil C-hook, also newly added to the platform. The 80H features a pivoting wedge that allows operators to separate stacked coils and initiate a tilt, enabling easier hook engagement. It is stocked in capacities up to 5 tons. Meanwhile, the Model 60 heavy-duty sheet lifter remains part of the growing SmartSpec catalog.
Jeff Ferchen, Caldwell’s director of business development, said the platform is gaining recognition for simplifying BTH equipment selection. He highlighted the speed of generating quotes and drawings as a key advantage.
Caldwell president and CEO Doug Stitt emphasized the importance of responsiveness, noting that customers increasingly expect rapid service and digital accessibility. The company continues to support both traditional catalogs and online tools to meet varied customer preferences.
Additional SmartSpec releases are planned, including the Model 25 twin hoist lifting beam.
