Three Group Solutions has completed the deployment of a private 5G network across Hutchison Ports’ UK operations, covering the Port of Felixstowe, Harwich International Port and London Thamesport. The project creates one of the most advanced industrial connectivity platforms in the UK, designed to support next-generation smart port operations.
The ultra-reliable, high-capacity and low-latency 5G network will underpin large-scale automation, including autonomous trucks, remote-controlled cranes and data-intensive digital applications. By spanning all three sites with a single private network, the solution strengthens resilience across this critical national infrastructure while supporting efficiency, safety and long-term sustainability goals.

The upgrade was delivered through a carefully managed transition from 4G to 5G, with both networks operating in parallel using separate spectrum. This phased approach ensured uninterrupted port operations while vehicles and equipment were migrated and performance optimised.
A key driver for the new network is Hutchison Ports’ rollout of autonomous, electric trucks at Felixstowe, which require continuous connectivity, ultra-low latency and the ability to handle multiple live video feeds. Beyond automation, the 5G platform provides a scalable foundation for future innovations such as predictive maintenance, drone inspections, video analytics and digital twins.
With the private 5G network now live, Felixstowe, Harwich and Thamesport are positioned for a new decade of smart port innovation.
