ABB to Deliver World’s Largest Shore Power System for Port of Rotterdam

Rate this post

ABB has signed contracts with Rotterdam Shore Power (RSP), a joint venture between the Port of Rotterdam and Dutch energy company Eneco, to engineer and construct a series of shore power installations at the Port of Rotterdam. Once completed, the combined systems are expected to be the largest shore power installation in the world by total capacity, exceeding 100 MVA.

The custom-designed solutions will be deployed across three deep-sea container terminals—APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, Hutchison Ports ECT Delta and Hutchison Ports ECT Euromax—and are scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2028. In total, the installations will provide 35 shore power connection points, enabling up to 32 container vessels to connect simultaneously during loading and unloading operations.

The project will play a key role in reducing emissions at Europe’s largest port and supporting compliance with the EU’s FuelEU Maritime Regulation, which will require container and passenger ships above 5,000 gross tonnage to use onshore power or equivalent zero-emission solutions in EU ports from 1 January 2030. According to Rotterdam Shore Power, using shore power for at least 90 percent of vessels’ moored time could reduce annual CO₂ emissions by around 96,000 tonnes from 2030.

ABB’s scope includes engineering, delivery, installation, commissioning and on-site testing, as well as multi-year service agreements for each terminal. Prefabricated and scalable solutions will minimize installation time and operational disruption, while allowing future integration with renewable energy sources. ABB will also supply its SCADA system to enable monitoring, control and accurate energy billing.

The contracts were booked in December 2025. Financial details were not disclosed.
