Hiab, a global provider of smart load-handling solutions, has announced a strategic partnership with Forterra, a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, to accelerate the development of autonomous trucking and load-handling systems.

The collaboration combines Forterra’s modular AutoDrive autonomy platform—widely deployed in defense logistics and industrial operations—with Hiab’s expertise in automated loading and unloading. Together, the companies aim to extend autonomy deeper into logistics workflows by automating systems such as cranes and hooklifts.

According to Hiab, the initiative will improve efficiency, enhance safety, and allow personnel to focus on higher-value tasks. The partnership’s first phase will align technology roadmaps and advance integration pathways, laying the groundwork for future autonomous solutions.

“With our MULTILIFT Talon container handling unit and Driver Support technology, Hiab is building the foundation for autonomous load handling,” said Hermanni Lyyski, President, Demountables and Defence at Hiab.Combining our robotics and AI expertise with Forterra’s AutoDrive platform will elevate autonomous capabilities in trucking and logistics, enhancing sustainability and safety for our customers.”

Forterra, best known for its leadership in autonomous ground systems for defense, brings over a decade of experience in deploying autonomy in complex, real-world environments. “This partnership extends autonomy across the logistics ecosystem,” added Gabe Sganga, Forterra’s Commercial Vice President. “By uniting our strengths, we can deliver integrated solutions that increase safety, efficiency, and adaptability in demanding sectors.”
