Höegh Autoliners has celebrated the naming of Höegh Moonlight, the sixth vessel in its Aurora-Class series, at the Port of Gothenburg, the largest port in the Nordic region. The vessel was sponsored by Jenny Westermark, Senior Vice President, GTO Production Logistics at Volvo Group, who performed the traditional bottle-breaking ceremony against a backdrop of sustainable Volvo cargo.

With capacity for 9,100 car equivalent units (CEU), Höegh Moonlight is part of a fleet of 12 next-generation pure car and truck carriers designed to advance the company’s ambition of achieving zero emissions by 2040. All Aurora-Class vessels are classed by DNV, sail under the Norwegian flag, and feature dual-fuel engines capable of running on LNG. The ships are “ammonia-ready,” with reinforced decks and integrated tanks that allow for straightforward conversion to clean ammonia. The final four vessels in the series, set for delivery from 2027, will be able to operate on ammonia from day one.

“The naming of Höegh Moonlight demonstrates our strong commitment to decarbonising deep-sea shipping – not in the future, but right now,” said CEO Andreas Enger. These vessels are not concepts; they are working, sailing answers to one of the most urgent challenges in our industry.”

Port of Gothenburg CEO Göran Eriksson welcomed the vessel, noting it strengthens Sweden’s connection to global markets while supporting the port’s green transition strategy. By 2030, the port aims to cut carbon emissions by 70%, with investments in shoreside power, green corridors, electrification, and alternative fuels.
