Sarens has played a key role in the dismantling of the South Angsi Alpha (SAA) offshore platform—the largest offshore platform ever decommissioned and reused in Malaysia. Located 130 km off the west coast of Malaysia, the platform had been in operation from August 2005 until its closure in 2019.
Working on behalf of Marine Masters, Sarens used 16 units of 450/650-ton strand jacks to carefully lower the 3,927-ton Mobile Offshore Application Barge (MOAB) onto a barge positioned 10 metres below. This complex lift marked the first strand jack decommissioning operation undertaken by Sarens’ APAC division.
The dismantling process involved the separation of the topside and 13 conductors from their support legs. The topside was transported to Labuan Shipyard for further disassembly, while the platform’s substructure was submerged to a depth of 70 metres to serve as a foundation for artificial reef development—contributing to marine biodiversity.
This project highlights Sarens’ growing involvement in offshore decommissioning across Asia. The operation demanded precise planning and engineering to meet safety standards and avoid downtime. With this milestone, Sarens adds to its extensive oil and gas portfolio, having previously participated in projects for Saudi Aramco, QFAB, and Pertamina.
