AAL Shipping (AAL), a project cargo specialist, has successfully completed the delivery of 83 wind turbines to the 500 MW Wambo Wind Farm in Queensland, Australia. The project, delivered in two stages between 2023 and 2025, now adds enough clean energy to power over 312,000 homes across the region.

The turbines were transported over 18 sailings using nine different multipurpose heavy lift vessels from AAL’s A-Class, G-Class, and S-Class fleets. The final shipment, carried by the AAL Genoa, marked the completion of Stage Two.

The Wambo Wind Farm, located near Jandowae, is a joint venture between Cubico Sustainable Investments and Queensland Government-owned Stanwell. Components – including towers in eight sections (up to 90 metric tonnes each), blades over 80 metres long, and other parts weighing up to 76 tonnes – were shipped from multiple Chinese ports and discharged in Brisbane.

Frank Mueller, AAL’s General Manager Oceania, commented, “This project directly supports Australia’s transition to renewable energy. Our team’s dedication helped deliver a clean power source to hundreds of thousands of homes.”

Innovative handling methods were also introduced, including the use of synthetic lashing chains to improve safety and reduce cargo damage risk during blade shipments. “They’re lighter, safer, and more efficient—especially when working at height,” noted Andrew Mangan, Chartering Manager at AAL Oceania.

Mueller added, “Despite shifting timelines, we adapted swiftly to maintain delivery schedules. This project reinforces AAL’s reputation as the region’s most reliable heavy lift service provider.”
