At the Nor-Shipping trade fair, DNV awarded HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) an Approval in Principle (AiP) for its new 40,000 CBM liquefied CO₂ (LCO₂) carrier design. The vessel, featuring three cargo holds instead of four, introduces a simplified architecture that enhances operational efficiency.

The redesign reduces the number of cargo tanks, streamlining inspection, maintenance, and loading operations, while minimizing the need for piping and instrumentation. Additionally, larger individual tank volumes boost the performance of the Boil-Off Gas (BOG) management system, leading to greater energy efficiency on board.

Receiving DNV’s AiP for our latest LCO carrier design shows our commitment to delivering practical, high-performance solutions for CO transport,” said Hong-Ryeul Ryu, CTO and Executive Vice President of HHI.As carbon capture and storage gains momentum, this design supports cost-effective and flexible supply chains.”

Vidar Dolonen, Regional Manager of DNV Korea & Japan, commented, “We’re proud to support HHI in advancing LCO transport. Collaborations like this help build confidence in the new value chains essential to a decarbonized future.”
