RINA, the inspection, certification, ship classification and consulting engineering company, has been named the classification society for Atal Solutions’ $123.7 million fleet retrofitting project. The initiative, led by Atal Solutions in partnership with Damen Shipyards Group, Blue Astra Maritime Shipping, and others, targets dramatic emissions reduction across existing vessels.

The project integrates over 10 technologies designed to cut CO₂, SOₓ, and NOₓ emissions, reduce fuel consumption by more than 25%, and minimize vessel waste. Four ships have already undergone retrofitting in Istanbul, with the dry-docking phase lasting approximately four weeks.

RINA is overseeing plan approval, onboard testing, and commissioning of key systems, including CO₂ capture and closed-loop scrubbers, air lubrication, shore power connectivity, and energy-efficient lighting. The classification society is also validating performance gains under MARPOL and EU sustainability frameworks, including the EU Emission Trading System (ETS) and Fuel EU Maritime.

This is a technologically innovative project that offers real solutions for sustainable shipping,” said Pino Spadafora, Marine Market Development Vice President at RINA. “We’re proud to bring our experience and expertise to this important initiative.”

Key technologies include CO₂ capture, hull air lubrication systems, Dex QM marine lubricant for energy savings, and advanced electrical systems — all working in synergy to transform the environmental impact of global shipping.
