Liebherr Container Cranes has launched an enhanced range of rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, celebrating 25 years of continuous development. The next-generation RTG lineup meets the evolving demands of terminal operations, offering improved efficiency, reduced emissions, and high performance.
The new portfolio includes five base models. The RTG-CB and ERTG-CRD are fully electric, powered by a conductor bar and cable reeling drum respectively. Hybrid options include the RTG-HC, using super-capacitors with a small diesel generator, and the RTG-HB, combining battery energy storage with diesel-electric power. The RTG-VSG offers a fuel-efficient diesel solution with a variable speed generator.
Sustainability and operational flexibility are central to the range. Charlie McCarthy, MD-Engineering at Liebherr, says the lineup allows operators to reduce emissions, save fuel, and tailor solutions to specific site needs. Liebherr’s simulation software supports this by modelling energy use and economic performance based on each customer’s operational scenario.
Liebherr’s commitment to innovation is longstanding. Since its first RTG, the company has featured an eight-rope reeving system for enhanced stability and precision—still a cornerstone of today’s designs. Integrated with the Liebherr Liduro drive system and a wide array of power options, the cranes now also support advanced automation and remote operation.
Looking ahead, Liebherr sees growing opportunities in automation, energy efficiency, and digital integration. Yet, its core values remain unchanged: long-lasting, reliable machines built to perform in the toughest port environments. Backed by world-class service, the new RTG range ensures operators are equipped for the challenges of today—and tomorrow.
