Rope and Sling Specialists (RSS) recently facilitated the lifting of USV-Pioneer, a dual-use ocean monitoring and data collection vessel, at the Plymouth dockside. The operation employed a one-over-two spreader beam rig beneath a 200t Liebherr LTM1200-5.1 mobile crane, provided by Sparrow Crane Hire Ltd.
The vessel, measuring 14.2m x 9m, was safely transferred from the wharf into a pontoon leading to Plymouth Sound. Initially, a custom beam setup was considered, but RSS proposed an alternative lifting system to ensure a safer and more cost-effective vertical lift, avoiding undue stress on the vessel.

Carl Coysh, depot manager at RSS Plymouth, explained: “Our modular spreader beam solution allowed for a near zero-degree lift on the deck points, eliminating concerns about excessive pressure on the structure.”
The rig consisted of a MOD34 spreader beam, MOD12 beams, roundslings of varying capacities, and alloy bow shackles to achieve a precise and stable lift. RSS had previously conducted proof load tests on RUD deck fall restraint points aboard the USV-Pioneer before being entrusted with further lifting tasks.

Mike Tinmouth, co-founder of Acua Ocean, highlighted the efficiency of crane lifting in enhancing launch flexibility. He added: “Working with experts like RSS has been invaluable in refining our launch solutions.”
Launched in December 2024, USV-Pioneer is undergoing further trials and evaluations, with more vessels expected to follow. RSS remains a key partner in the ongoing development of this innovative project.
