DP World is set to boost the UK’s trading capacity with a £60 million investment in four new quay cranes for its Southampton container terminal. These cranes, the largest in Europe, will feature quad-lift technology, allowing them to move two 40ft containers simultaneously, streamlining loading and unloading operations for mega container vessels.
Standing taller than Big Ben and weighing over 2,000 tonnes each, the cranes are designed to service the world’s largest ships, including 24,000 TEU megaships. With an operational lifespan of 25 years, they will play a key role in future-proofing DP World Southampton’s capabilities. The cranes, which are being supplied by ZPMC, are expected to arrive from mid-2026.
Aart Hille Ris Lambers, Vice President – Commercial, Ports & Terminals at DP World UK, emphasized the importance of the investment: “Our order for these large quay cranes comes at a crucial time. We continue to innovate and invest to ensure the smooth and efficient handling of the world’s largest container vessels. As we expand our nationwide supply chain network, we remain committed to improving infrastructure and service for our customers.”
This investment follows DP World Southampton’s recent recognition with a ‘Productivity Improvement Award’ from global shipping giant ONE (Ocean Network Express), acknowledging its efforts to enhance handling rates between 2022 and 2023.
DP World operates major UK hubs at Southampton and London Gateway, alongside integrated logistics, forwarding, and European transport services. As part of a global network spanning 78 countries, DP World handles 10% of the world’s containerized trade.
