Accelera by Cummins will supply a 100-megawatt (MW) proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer system for bp’s largest hydrogen production plant at its Lingen refinery in Germany. This project marks a significant step in bp’s efforts to scale up green hydrogen production and support industrial decarbonization.

The system will include 20 HyLYZER-1000 electrolyzer units—the largest assembled by Accelera to date—manufactured at its new electrolyzer plant in Guadalajara, Spain. Once operational in 2027, the system will produce up to 11,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. The hydrogen produced will be powered entirely by offshore wind energy, ensuring carbon-free production and contributing to a cleaner energy transition.

“This project highlights Accelera’s ability to deliver large-scale hydrogen solutions that drive the energy transition,” said Andreas Lippert, Vice President and General Manager of Electrolyzers at Accelera. “Collaborating with bp allows us to accelerate the green hydrogen economy with advanced technology and industrial-scale applications.”

The hydrogen generated at bp’s Lingen facility will play a crucial role in supporting industrial decarbonization efforts. The project is set to benefit key regional industries, including steel and chemical manufacturing, by providing a cleaner energy alternative.

Accelera’s advanced PEM electrolyzer technology enhances scalability and performance, optimizing system efficiency. This technological innovation ensures the project remains at the forefront of green hydrogen production, driving sustainability while meeting growing energy demands.

Our Lingen refinery has provided energy to German industry for more than 70 years,” said Felipe Arbelaez, Senior Vice President for Hydrogen and Carbon Capture & Storage at bp.Now, we are transforming its role to produce low-carbon hydrogen that supports both our operations and the broader regional industry.”
