BP Europa SE has announced plans to sell its Ruhr Oel GmbH – BP Gelsenkirchen operations in Germany, including the Gelsenkirchen refinery and DHC Solvent Chemie GmbH in Mülheim an der Ruhr.
The search for a suitable buyer begins immediately, with sales agreements expected in 2025. The refinery will continue normal operations throughout the process, with finalizing the sale dependent on regulatory approvals.
Emma Delaney, EVP of customers & products, stated that BP’s strategy is to simplify and focus its portfolio. “After a thorough review, we believe a new owner would be better suited to drive the site’s future growth.”
BP has invested significantly in modernizing the Gelsenkirchen refinery, including upgrading its power grid and steam supply. The site processes global crude oils, produces high-quality fuels, and has the potential to manufacture biofuels and recycle plastics.
Patrick Wendeler, CEO of BP Europa SE, highlighted the site’s strategic location in North Rhine-Westphalia’s chemical cluster and its strong potential under new ownership.
