Tokyo Gas has announced its first direct investment in an overseas floating offshore wind power project, joining the WindFloat Atlantic wind farm in Portugal. Operated by Windplus S.A., a subsidiary of Ocean Winds (OW), this investment strengthens the partnership between Tokyo Gas and OW, who are already co-shareholders of Principle Power, a leader in floating foundation technology for offshore wind. The collaboration is set to pave the way for developing floating offshore wind projects in Japan.
WindFloat Atlantic, the world’s first semi-submersible floating offshore wind farm, has been operational since 2020. It features 8.4 MW wind turbines and utilizes WindFloat® technology, a floating foundation system developed by Principle Power. Known for its structural stability, the system has demonstrated its ability to withstand harsh weather conditions, including 20-meter waves and wind gusts up to 38.8 m/s.
KIMOTO Kentaro, Tokyo Gas’s Vice President and Chief Executive of Green Transformation Company, said, “We are pleased to strengthen our relationship with Ocean Winds through our participation in WindFloat Atlantic. We aim to leverage this collaboration to advance floating offshore wind power commercialization in Japan.”
Craig Windram, CEO of Ocean Winds, added, “We are excited to welcome Tokyo Gas as we continue developing WindFloat Atlantic. This partnership will support the global growth of floating offshore wind, especially in Japan, contributing to the country’s renewable energy goals and a sustainable future.”
This investment signifies a key step in Tokyo Gas’s push towards renewable energy and the potential to enhance Japan’s clean energy landscape.
