Liebherr Completes Major Crane Upgrade at Port Liberty, New York

Rate this post

Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. has successfully completed a significant upgrade on three of the four ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes at Port Liberty (formerly Global Container Terminals) in New York, with the fourth crane’s upgrade to be finalized in the coming weeks. The project involved increasing the lift height by 8.6 meters and extending the boom outreach by 5 meters. These enhancements enable the cranes to efficiently handle larger vessels, significantly improving the port’s service capabilities.

The upgrade process, captured in dramatic footage available on Liebherr Maritime’s social media channels, was made efficient by Liebherr’s innovative jacking system. This system uses the crane’s end carriage as a stable base, eliminating the need for additional equipment and allowing the lift height extension to be completed within several weeks. This method ensures minimal disruption to terminal operations.
