Stena Line and ABP Launch £200m Freight Terminal Project in Immingham

Stena Line and Associated British Ports (ABP) have begun work on a major new freight ferry terminal at the Port of Immingham, marking a joint investment of over £200 million. The development strengthens the Humber region’s position as a growing hub for unaccompanied freight between the UK and mainland Europe.

Immingham, located in Lincolnshire, already plays a key role in Stena Line’s network, with two daily services running to the Netherlands. ABP’s four Humber ports together form the UK’s largest gateway for trade by volume.

The new Immingham Eastern RoRo Terminal (IERRT) will provide faster access to the Humber Estuary, allowing shorter sailing times and capacity for larger vessels to meet rising demand from importers and exporters nationwide.

Stena Line CEO Niclas Mårtensson said the project demonstrates the company’s “ongoing commitment to the North East of England” and is central to expanding freight links between the UK and Continental Europe. He noted a long-term agreement with ABP that “secures operations… through to the next century.

ABP CEO Henrik Pedersen said the terminal highlights the port operator’s mission to “Keep Britain Trading,” enhancing supply chain resilience for UK businesses.

UK Transport Minister Simon Lightwood called the investment “a big win for Lincolnshire and the North,” set to bring hundreds of new jobs and economic growth.

The project is expected to create around 700 construction jobs and a further 200 permanent roles once operational, boosting local employment and the wider Humber economy.
