Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has marked a major milestone with the first-ever LNG bunkering of a car carrier in Western North America. The MOL-operated Lake Herman received LNG fuel from Seaspan Garibaldi, an LNG bunkering vessel operated by Seaspan Energy, in English Bay via a Ship-to-Ship transfer.
This operation also represents the first LNG bunkering for a Japanese shipping company in the region. MOL is committed to expanding LNG fuel supply bases worldwide as part of its broader environmental strategy. The company aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 under its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2” and continues to promote clean alternative fuels for decarbonization.
Harly Penner, President of Seaspan Energy, stated, “We are proud to share this milestone with MOL as Lake Hermanbecomes the first car carrier to receive LNG via Ship-to-Ship bunkering in Western North America. We appreciate the trust from our customer and look forward to a long-lasting relationship.”
Yoshikazu Urushitani, General Manager of MOL’s Marine Fuel GX Division, highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “With no previous LNG fuel supply base in Western North America, deployment of LNG-fueled vessels was limited. This successful bunkering with Seaspan Energy expands our ability to offer environmentally friendly shipping options.”
