Mammoet’s Plug-and-Play Solution Speeds Up Crusher Relocation for Codelco

Codelco, Chile’s state-owned copper mining giant, has successfully relocated key crusher components with the expertise of Mammoet, using an efficient ‘unplug-and-play’ heavy transport solution. The operation ensured minimal disassembly and expedited reinstallation, reducing downtime for the mining operation.

The relocation involved 16 components, including the ‘big six’—the heaviest and most critical elements of the crusher system. The site had never undertaken such a large-scale move before and turned to Mammoet for its heavy lifting and transport expertise.

By devising an approach that allowed major components to be transported as whole units, Mammoet reduced project costs and cut completion time. Engineers carefully planned the 4.5-kilometer transport route, considering factors like slope, road width, and turn ratios.

A major logistical challenge was mobilizing specialized equipment from across Mammoet’s global branches. Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) came from Malaysia, skidding systems from the U.S., and additional equipment from Colombia. A team of 70 professionals executed the relocation using 160 axle lines of SPMTs, jacking systems, skid shoes, and support beams.

Among the most complex movements was the 1,300-ton crusher, which required customized support beams with reinforced lifting points. Mammoet used skid tracks and SPMTs to extract, transport, and reposition the structure with precision. A nearby staging area allowed for a 180-degree rotation before installation.

The entire operation, completed in just over a month, surpassed expectations. By eliminating unnecessary dismantling, Mammoet enabled Codelco to resume operations swiftly. “This innovative method saved significant time,” said Mammoet Sales Manager Vanessa Labana. “Codelco now has a trusted partner for future projects.”
