A remarkable new attraction is taking shape in the Harz Mountains as construction nears completion on the region’s highest viewing tower, dubbed the “world’s largest witches’ broom.” Located in Rothesütte near the Lower Saxony border, the tower will be part of the Harzer Hexenreich (Harz Land of Witches) experience.

Standing at an impressive 70 metres, the structure offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Harz forests, meadows, and peaks, including the Wurmberg and Brocken. The tower will also feature an interactive exhibition delving into local myths and folklore, making it a key highlight along the Harzer Hexenstieg hiking trail.

The challenging construction process relied on a Liebherr 340 EC-B 16 tower crane from Hüffermann, which played a crucial role in assembling the 452-tonne steel structure. With a hook height of 57.5 metres and a 40-metre radius, the crane lifted 12.5-tonne steel sections onto the tower’s concrete base, navigating the site’s difficult access conditions with precision. A total of 2,560 steel components and 22,300 bolts were used in the build, with the crane dismantled at the end of 2024 after the final installation.
