DP World has created a joint venture with the industrial engineering specialists SMS group with the aim to improve containers handling in ports. Originally developed by AMOVA, a subsidiary of the SMS group, this new high bay storage system continuously processes metal coils weighing up to 50 t in racks as high as 50 m. Instead of stacking containers directly on top of each other, which has been global standard practice for decades, the system places each container in an individual rack comportent. The containers are stored in an eleven-story rack, doubling its capacity compared to a conventional container terminal. This new system will be used for the first time at Jebel Ali Terminal 4, just in time for the Dubai Expo 2020 world fair.
Faced with a recent increase in demand for internal airport logistics in the Middle East and Africa region, the manufacturer of heavy-duty and special transport vehicles Goldhofer has opened a new sales and service center for its Airport Technology division in collaboration with ALS Logistic Solutions on 11 December 2018 in Dubai.
In addition to its sales and service activities of its Airport Technology division, the new location also provides various services for the Transport Technology division in the region. This new sales and service center will be located in the Jumeirah Lake Towers in Dubai City.
Sharjah Seaports Authority, based in the United Arab Emirates, has recently ordered a new Demag AC 100-4L all terrain crane through the Terex Cranes distributor Al-Bahar.
“We have chosen the Demag AC 100-4L because of the excellent reputation of this brand, which with the made-in-Germany seal, stands for high quality around the world,” explains Eng Ahmed Bin Ahmed, Marine Engineer and Head of Plant at Sharjah Seaport Authority.
The new crane will operate at the Sharjah Port Khalid.

In UAE, to build its container terminal in Khalifa Port named the Khalifa Port Container Terminal (KPCT), the port company Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT) has chosen Konecranes to supply 54 Automated Rail Mounted Gantry cranes. The Finnish manufacturer has been already selected by ADT to deliver 52 ARMG cranes for the first phase of the KPCT in 2012. The machines have a lifting capacity of 40t and can stack one over six containers high. “Thirty of the cranes will be nine-wide, and twenty-four will be eleven wide,” added Konecranes company. The new order will be booked in the fourth quarter 2018.
Following previous operations on the Dubai Metro Lines, the heavy lifting and transport specialist Al Faris, based in Dubai, handled the loading, transporting and lifting of precast girders weighing 426 t.
After careful calculations and precise analysis, it was decided to use a gantry system for lifting the girders due to problems caused by the confined space restrictions. At first the precast girders were loaded using a SBL900 gantry system on its 19-axle Goldhofer THP / SL trailer connected to a 680 horsepower heavy duty prime mover. The gantry was set up with a Liebherr 100t all terrain crane and forklift. The precast girders were then lifted and erected on the metro column by a 650t crawler crane with SSL2 configuration and 42m main boom. All the operations were performed at night to avoid road traffic and other obstacles.
The heavy lifting and transport specialist Al Faris has recently completed the loading and transportation of a turret type buoy, one of the biggest and heaviest buoy in the world to be carried on road, from Dubai to Jebel Ali Port. The load, weighing 455t with a 18.3m diameter and 16m height, was transported using 4 files of 16 axles Goldhofer SPMT (self-propelled modular transporter) and was loaded by the self-jacking system of the trailer. The biggest challenge during the transportation was maneuvering the SPMT with the load in narrow routes, bottles necks and sharp turns as well as significant diversions and managing temporary traffic routes.
DP World’s Jebel Ali Terminal 1 has taken a delivery of six Konecranes forklift trucks. Ordered in November 2017, the forklift trucks delivered in June are the model Konecranes SMV16-1200C with a lifting capacity of 16 metric tons at 1200 millimetres and a wheelbase of 3750 millimetres. To fulfil DP World’s safety requirements the machines are equipped with overload protection system, disabled forklift operation when seatbelt is disengaged and Groeneveld Greensight reverse system, which is an obstacle detection system combining reverse camera with ultrasound sensors for enhanced safety. Yahya Al Suwaidi, Manager Plant Workshop T1, DP World UAE Region, said: “Since we have very demanding operations we need machines with high productivity and minimum downtime. Due to the quality and reliability of the machines together with excellent aftersales support we choose Konecranes.”
